Schleswiger Kaltblut conservation breed
Development of modern methods for the conservation breeding of the Schleswig cold-blooded horse in Schleswig-Holstein
Project description
The Schleswiger Kaltblut is a native livestock breed that is classified as critically endangered in the Red List of endangered livestock breeds (BLE 2023). In order to ensure the survival of this cultural asset of Schleswig-Holstein as a robust and versatile horse breed, modern methods for the conservation breeding of the Schleswiger Kaltblut are to be developed. A supervised questionnaire campaign provides information on the keeping and use of Schleswiger Kaltblut horses. In addition, SNP genotyping (selection of single nucleotide polymorphism markers in the laboratory, “genetic fingerprint”) of as many breed representatives as possible creates the data basis for the development of optimized mating recommendations. The aim is to provide targeted support to minimize inbreeding and preserve the genetic diversity of the Schleswiger Kaltblut. At the same time, the documentation and preservation of the essential breed characteristics is significantly promoted by the introduction of linear description. Characteristic, value-free data on individual horses will become available and can be made available to breeders for their own horses. Corresponding information on possible mating partners can be used to support breeding decisions. In order to contribute to the conservation of animal genetic resources, the present project provides for the cryopreservation of semen and embryos from Schleswiger cold-blooded horses that are valuable for breeding.
The project expects the following concrete results:
- Strengthening the data basis for the Schleswiger Kaltblut (husbandry, use, conformation, performance, behavior)
- Genetic characterization of the Schleswiger Kaltblut population (SNP genotyping) as a basis for the description of genetic diversity and for future-oriented breeding decisions
- Introduction of linear description for the value-free characterization of breeding animals and their offspring
- Support for breeders of Schleswiger Kaltblut horses through a scientifically based mating program that enables important breed characteristics and genetic diversity to be incorporated into breeding decisions
- Preservation of genetic material in the form of semen and embryos to ensure long-term availability.
Information events and workshops serve to inform breeders and the public about the project, its significance for the breed and its results. In the long term, this will support the preservation and sustainable use of the Schleswiger Kaltblut and ensure the survival of this valuable horse breed.
